Richard H. Stewart, the Publisher, and I visited with Lad Akins, Director of Special Projects at Reef Environmental Education Foundation ( REEF ) organization. Our specific target is information on the explosive increase in populations of the lionfish, an Indo-Pacific species, in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. The lionfish has no known natural predators is our local waters. Local divers all along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts have begun harvesting lionfish to help protect indigenous fish species from over predation by the voracious lionfish. Lionfish are armed with venomous dorsal spines that can cause painful injuries to the diver looking to harvest the tasty fish without the proper training and equipment. The fillets of large lionfish when carefully prepared are a delicious food source. The Wyland Ocean Realm Journal will follow the lead of the Wyland Foundation in its efforts to lead the public in protecting our oceans worldwide.
